This Week at Living Faith – May 14th edition

Luke 24:50-53 (New International Version)

The Ascension

50When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.

This Sunday is “Ascension Sunday” – a day which commemorates when Christ physically left the earth and ascended into heaven.  After rising from the dead, Jesus remained on earth for 40 days, but then His disciples witnessed His miraculous ascent into the heavenly realm.

This is a confusing event.  We are left with several questions:  Where did Christ go?  Where is heaven?  Is it a geographical location or a state of mind?  These are some of the questions we are going to explore as we worship together this Sunday at Living Faith.  I hope you’ll come and join us.

May Christ’s peace be with you,

Heather

Christian Family Sunday at Living Faith

Hello friends,

This Sunday, according to our calendars, is Mother’s Day – a time when we honour and celebrate our mothers, or those who have served as a mother figure for us.  In the Presbyterian Church in Canada, this Sunday has also been set aside as Christian Family Sunday – a day to thank God for our families.  As many of you know, Nancy (our Director of Student Ministries) and I were away all last week at the “Think Orange” conference in Duluth, Georgia.  This is a Family Ministries conference designed to examine the role of church (yellow) and family (red) and how the two can partner together to raise the next generation.  While we were at the conference, the Barna Group, a Christian research organization, released the results of its latest poll on The State of Church and Family.  Some of the results were mind-boggling – and disheartening, especially when we it comes to the state of the family.  Now, more than ever, the church needs to step up to its responsibility to care for families, whatever format the family might happen to take.  And it IS the church’s responsibility, as seen in Deuteronomy 6.  I hope you will join us for worship this Sunday as we examine Deut. 6 and discuss the responsibility we have- as a church AND a family – to “think orange”.

A reminder of our spring clean-up day tomorrow (Saturday) at Living Faith.  We’ll be sprucing up our property, inside and out, starting at about 8am.  Thanks to Gary Cochrane and his crew for cutting the dandelions – I mean grass – this afternoon.  The lawn and the gardens look beautiful!

May Christ’s peace be with you,
Heather

One of our elders, Darrell Gauley, gave this sermon based on “using what is cultural to teach what is timeless” (quote from Reggie Joiner).
