Living Faith Community Presbyterian Church was formed in January of 2004. However, this new congregation has roots which date back to the 1800s. Living Faith was created when the congregations of Cookstown and Baxter Presbyterian Churches amalgamated, uniting together with a common vision to effectively reach out to the community and the wider world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Since amalgamating, the congregation has grown in size, and includes several people who have no ties at all to the former Baxter or Cookstown congregations.
Living Faith recognizes Jesus Christ as the only Head of the church and believes that everyone has been equipped with gifts to serve in the church and the community. We believe in the authority of Scripture as God’s inspired word, and we joyfully acknowledge that each one of us is called to bring God’s justice, healing, mercy, reconciliation and love to the world.
Living Faith belongs to the Presbyterian Church in Canada which was formed in 1875 and grew out of the Church of Scotland which was developed after the Protestant Reformation of 1517. You can learn more about what we believe as Presbyterians by visiting www.presbyterian.ca/about.
Our Ministry Team at Living Faith:
Rev. Heather Malnick:
Heather’s call to ordained ministry was gradual and grew from a life-long journey serving God through the local church in a variety of different roles – Sunday School teacher, Youth Director, Jr. Choir Leader, and member of various teams and committees. She obtained a Bachelor of Religious Education from Tyndale University College in 2002, a Master of Divinity from Knox College, University of Toronto in 2006, and is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Ministry program at Tyndale Seminary studying Ministry Leadership, specifically in the area of how the church can be a place of welcome and support for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families. Heather is passionate about community-needs evangelism, discovering how the church can reach out to its neighbours in practical and faith-filled ways. Heather and her husband, John, have been blessed with three sons: Cameron, Jordan, and Ben, along with their grandson, Jackson. Life is busy but fun as they enjoy camping, biking, reading, traveling and backyard BBQ’s.
Nancy Gallant, Director of Family Ministries:
Nancy serves the children and youth of our congregation as well as their families. Nancy brings passion and enthusiasm to her position as Director of Family Ministries. Nancy leads Living Faith’s Messy Church, After School Club, NRG Jr. Youth Group, and AMPed Sr. Youth Group. Nancy and her husband Peter have two children, Ryan and Michelle.
Janine Leonard, Director of Music:
Janine’s passion for praising God through music is evident as she directs Living Faith’s Music Team and leads the congregation in worship each Sunday. Janine and her husband, Trace, have three children, BreAnn, Parnell, and Camden and they make their home in nearby Thornton. Trace also serves the congregation as part of the Sound Team, Finance Team, and as the leader of the Feasibility Study Team, examining ways in which we can expand our space to accommodate our growing church family.
Lisa Sawden, Director of Children’s Ministries:
Lisa brings her gifts as a teacher and mother to this position, overseeing “The Bridge” Children’s Ministry at Living Faith. Lisa is married to Mark and they have two beautiful children, Quinton and Izabelle.
Christopher MacInnis, Director of Maintenance:
Christopher’s love for God and His church is lived out through his desire to care for our house of worship, creating a place of warmth and welcome to all who enter through our doors. Chris and his wife, Meredith, have two daughters, Lydia and Marion.
Living Faith is led by a team of 12 faithful elders who are elected to their positions by the congregation. Our elders range in age from 17 to 70+ and possess a variety of gifts which they willingly bring to their role as leaders. The elders at Living Faith are:
